Scientists in Britain alarmed by a new threat.
Scientist from the University of Exeter in England, Gail Whiteman, expressed concern about the increase in average temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius in 2024. He doubts that society will do anything about it. The expert believes we are approaching a critical safety point for humanity and may find ourselves in a dangerous state of passivity.
Several international organizations monitoring global temperature have also reported this. Although each group has its own data, the average statistics show that last year the temperature on Earth rose by 1.55 degrees Celsius above the average value for the period from 1850 to 1900, which is considered pre-industrial.
The temperature increase in 2024 is statistically significant compared to the 2023 figure, when heat records were set. Research is being conducted to determine whether this jump indicates a change in the Earth's climate system.
According to the lead scientist at Nature Conservancy, Katharine Hayhoe, we are still living in a world with air temperatures 1.3 degrees Celsius higher. She notes that most of the heat produced by greenhouse gases is absorbed by the oceans, land, and ice of the Earth. However, when the average decadal air temperature rises by 1.5 degrees Celsius, more heat will accumulate on the planet, leading to intensified storms and wildfires, damage to ecosystems, and rising sea levels.
In Kyiv, 2024 was the warmest year recorded, with an average annual temperature of +11.4 degrees Celsius, which is 2.4 degrees Celsius above the norm.
