Fairy-tale decorations: what attracts to the mysterious town in the rocks of Spain.
In Spain, there is a special town - Setenil de las Bodegas, located amidst the ancient basalt cliffs of Andalusia.
This town is surrounded by huge stone boulders that seem immovable, even though they loom over the houses and streets. One might think they will collapse at any moment, but that is not the case, as these cliffs have stood motionless for millions of years.
The town has existed for over eight centuries and is situated on a mountain plateau south of the city of Ronda in the Spanish province of Cádiz.
The entire area is filled with stone - it is underfoot, on the walls, even above the head. The townspeople live in houses built within the extensions of natural caves, but this does not mean they are cave dwellers. Modern technologies blend well with the unique landscape, giving the town a fairy-tale appearance. Stone blocks break into the houses, becoming part of the interior.
The residents of the town have always been known for their courage. They stubbornly resisted the Romans, who could only take the settlement after a 15-day siege. Therefore, the town got its name 'Setenil', which comes from the Latin phrase 'septem nihil' ('seven times unsuccessfully'). The Romans attacked this town in vain seven times.
The second part of the name 'de las Bodegas' ('of the wine cellars') appeared much later, in the 15th century, when wine production in valuable varieties developed here. The recipes for this wine are still highly valued by local winemakers.
Vineyards were first planted by Christians, as previously olive and almond trees grew in this area.
In the 20th century, the town gained fame for its meat products. So if you visit Setenil de las Bodegas, you will definitely be offered to try chorizo - a spicy pork sausage that is the pride of Spanish cuisine. And the piglets, from which this sausage is made, roam the hills surrounding the town.
If you appreciate sweets, Setenil de las Bodegas is famous for its pastries, which can be tasted in one of the local cafes.
The area of the town is 82 square kilometers, and the population currently stands at about 3,000 people.
