Russia’s Night Assault on Ukraine Kills 4, Wounds 38, with Kyiv as Primary Target.
Russia’s Overnight Attack on Ukraine
According to UATV: On June 2, a large-scale Russian assault across Ukraine left four people dead and 38 others injured. The capital, Kyiv, bore the brunt of the strikes, with dozens of residential buildings damaged. In Dnipro, rescue crews are still working at the site of a four-story building, where preliminary reports indicate nine fatalities, including at least one child. Another six people remain unaccounted for, and search efforts are set to continue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated: 'Nine people were killed in this attack, among them a child. Thirty-five were injured in the city. The fate of six more people is unknown. Their search will go on for as long as necessary.'
The offensive was massive in scale: Russia deployed 729 airborne attack assets, including 656 strike drones and 73 missiles of various types. Strikes targeted the following regions:
- Kharkiv
- Kyiv
- Mykolaiv
- Zaporizhzhia
- Poltava
- Sumy
- Chernihiv
- Khmelnytskyi
Volodymyr Zelensky added: 'In just one night, Russia launched 656 strike drones and 73 missiles of various types—ballistic, cruise, and anti-ship—against our people. This was a massive attack, and Russia’s message is transparent: if Ukraine is not shielded from ballistic and other missile strikes, these attacks will continue.'
The president also stressed the urgent need for international support: 'We absolutely require U.S. assistance in supplying missiles for Patriot systems.' He voiced hope for partner backing and concrete responses to the latest strike: 'We count on our partners’ support and on effective answers to today’s attack.' Rescue operations are still in progress, and the situation remains tense.
This assault is the latest chapter in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, which began in 2014. It highlights the persistent danger that aerial bombardments pose to civilians and underscores the critical need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses. The international community—especially the United States—can play a decisive role in providing military aid, reinforcing the importance of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict and protect Ukrainian territory.
