Germany investigates mass cases of pseudo-refugees from Hungary: details.
According to inkorr.com: German law enforcement is investigating numerous cases where Hungarian citizens with Hungarian passports attempted to pose as Ukrainian refugees without grounds. This became known after situations were discovered where among those arriving from Ukraine were individuals who did not speak Ukrainian and used Hungarian or sought assistance from a Hungarian translator.
Questionable cases among refugees
According to migration services, from May 2023 to October 2025, 9640 suspicious cases were recorded, of which 1136 pertain to 2025. These individuals, being citizens of the European Union, do not have the right to temporary protection or social assistance intended for Ukrainian refugees.
Peter Balog, a scientist at the Institute of Regional Research and an associate professor at Budapest University, explained that Hungary issued passports to ethnic Hungarians and Roma from Transcarpathia in Ukraine to facilitate employment and education. However, since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the issue of dual citizenship has intensified, especially for those who could not adapt in Hungary.
Danger to real refugees
Those Ukrainians who genuinely need international protection may suffer from the actions of individuals trying to exploit the situation for their own benefit. The investigation by law enforcement is an important step in combating abuses and ensuring the rights of lawful refugees.
This situation jeopardizes not only the reputation of the refugee protection program but also complicates the assistance process for those Ukrainians who have come out of critical conditions in their country. It is important for authorities to monitor such cases to protect true beneficiaries.
