Pakistan is developing powerful long-range ballistic missiles that allow the country to target sites outside South Asia. US Deputy National Security Advisor John Finer emphasizes that this poses a 'new threat' to the US.

Pakistan, which possesses nuclear weapons, is also working on developing sophisticated missile technology, ranging from long-range ballistic missiles to more powerful rocket engines, Finer reported during his speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

He believes that if such development continues, Pakistan will be able to target sites beyond South Asia, including the US. The Deputy Advisor also noted that there are few states with nuclear weapons and missiles that can reach the US, but they are considered adversaries.

'So frankly, we find it hard to see Pakistan's actions as anything other than a new threat to the United States,' Finer added.

Recently, the US announced new sanctions related to Pakistan's ballistic missile program. These restrictions are quite impactful and are being applied for the first Time against the state defense agency responsible for this program.

Two senior officials in the US administration, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Washington is concerned about the size of the rocket engines being developed in Pakistan's missile program. They believe the threat to the US will exist for at least the next 10 years.

'They do not understand our concerns. They claim we have a commitment,' one official added.

Furthermore, he noted that Pakistani officials misunderstand the US sanctions regarding their missile program and believe that they are aimed at 'destroying their ability to defend against India.'
