New EES System at the EU Border: What Ukrainians Can Expect from November 3

According to inkorr.com: At the 'Yahodyn - Dorohusk' and 'Ustyluh - Zosin' crossing points, there may be a slowdown in traffic due to the introduction of the digital Entry/Exit System for the Schengen zone. The innovation requires mandatory registration of travelers with biometric data, which may temporarily increase the time to pass through control. This was reported by 'GLAVKOM' citing the State Customs Service.

Beginning November 3, 2025, all travelers crossing the border through the mentioned checkpoints from the Polish side must undergo initial registration at a self-service terminal or with a border guard employee. This involves passport scanning and collection of biometric data: photography and fingerprinting. Fingerprints are not required for children under 12. During subsequent entries, biometric data will be verified against already existing digital information in the Schengen system,” the message states.

Customs specialists note that the implementation of this system may lead to an increase in control procedure times. To avoid delays, it is recommended to plan trips with a larger time reserve or consider alternative crossing points.

Changes in Border Crossing Rules

On October 12, new rules for crossing external borders started in the European Union concerning citizens from third countries, including Ukrainians. The introduction of the Entry and Exit System (EES) simplifies the procedure for collecting biometric data from travelers, replacing traditional passport stamps with electronic records.

Thus, the new requirements for travelers at the borders with the Schengen zone involve mandatory registration with biometric data, which may increase waiting times during control procedures. Citizens are advised to choose alternative routes or plan their travels with adequate time reserves.

These changes reflect a trend towards digitalizing border procedures, which, on one hand, aims to enhance security, but on the other hand, may create certain inconveniences for travelers. Preliminary preparation and awareness of the new rules will help ensure more comfortable travel conditions in the near future.
