Italy is building the longest suspension bridge in the world: details of the grand project.
New bridge in Italy
Italy is preparing to build a new bridge that will connect Sicily with the mainland of the country. The government is expected to approve the project this week, reports The Sun.
It is noted that this project involves the construction of a 3.5-kilometer bridge across the Messina Strait, located between Sicily and mainland Italy. The idea of the bridge has been around since the days of the Roman Empire.
In 2009, the plan was almost realized, but in 2013, the project was suspended due to the closure of the construction company. However, according to sources, the Italian government plans to approve the project this week.
The Economic Planning and Sustainable Development Committee (CIPESS) is expected to meet on August 7. About 13.5 billion euros are planned to be allocated for the construction of the bridge.
Upon completion of the project, the bridge over the Messina Strait will become the longest suspension bridge in the world, designed to withstand earthquakes and strong winds. The completion of construction is planned for 2032.
