Kyiv Metro Changes Travel Rules: Who Will Not Be Allowed Through Turnstiles in August.
The Kyiv Metro remains the fastest way to get from one district of the capital to another. However, you can only use the subway if you follow the rules. In some cases, a passenger may be denied entry.
Regarding who and for what reasons may not be allowed through the subway turnstiles in August 2025, it is noted in the Kyiv Metro usage rules.
Why Some Passengers Are Not Allowed in the Metro
To enter the metro, you must have a valid electronic ticket registered in the ASOP system. If the ticket is expired, invalid, or not in the database — the turnstile will not pass.
This also applies to beneficiaries. Even free travel is only possible with a valid electronic ticket issued in the owner’s name. If the document belongs to someone else or its validity period has expired, entry will be blocked.
There are also rules regarding the transportation of luggage. If a passenger's belongings exceed the allowable dimensions or pose a potential danger, access to the subway may be restricted.
What Luggage Is Prohibited in the Metro
Some items are prohibited from being transported in the capital's metro. This is done for the safety of passengers and the preservation of equipment. Prohibited are:
- Rolls with a diameter of more than 15 cm and a length greater than 170 cm.
- Cages or containers with dimensions exceeding 120 cm in combined measurements.
- Long objects over 220 cm (fishing rods, pipes, garden tools, etc.).
- Luggage on trolleys (the exception is suitcases or bags on wheels up to 200 cm in combined measurements).
- Any items if the sum of length + width + height exceeds 200 cm.
- Flammable, explosive, poisonous, narcotic, or corrosive substances, as well as gas and oxygen cylinders.
- Items without reliable fastening that can injure or dirty passengers or damage metro property.
Transporting Animals in the Metro in August 2025
The rules allow taking pets, but only if the requirements are met. Cats must be in special carriers, small animals in cages or containers, and small dogs (up to 45 cm at the withers) can be transported in a container or held in hands.
Large dogs are prohibited in the metro, except for guide dogs, which must have a collar, leash, and muzzle. Passengers with wild or exotic animals, including monkeys, predatory birds, reptiles, or snakes, will not be allowed into the subway.
Earlier we wrote that in Ukraine, free travel in public transport is provided for the elderly, but not all transport falls under this benefit — even after 60 years, some trips will still require payment.
We also reported that despite the lack of domestic flights, Ukrainians continue to use airplanes, departing from neighboring countries. Before traveling, it is worth familiarizing oneself with airline rules, as some items are prohibited from being taken on board.
In the summer of 2025, the Kyiv Metro introduced new rules regarding the transport of passengers, luggage, and animals. Passengers must pay attention to the condition of their tickets, the compliance of the size of their luggage, and adherence to the requirements for transporting animals in the metro to avoid problems when entering the stations.
