Odesa region after attacks by the Russian Federation: how transport is being restored and safety ensured

According to ТСН: The safety of the civilian population and the normal functioning of transport have been ensured in the Odesa region, despite attacks from the Russian occupiers. The damaged bridge is planned to be restored, and alternative crossings have also been organized.

Situation on the ground

The head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Oleg Kiper, commented on the situation after the attacks by the Russian Federation on the region's transport infrastructure.

“The movement of civilian vehicles over the bridge did not stop: even during air raids, we organized a safe crossing for people, an evacuation of buses and passenger vehicles, so that no one was left under the open sky for the night,” Kiper said.

He added that the State Emergency Service, police, special services, and communal services worked on each route, already organizing alternative crossings.

“We understood that this could happen, so the authorities and military command took into account all possible critical scenarios. A two-week supply of medicines has been formed in the southern regions of the Odesa region, which is constantly being replenished and provided to hospitals,” Kiper noted.

According to him, there is a sufficient supply of food and fuel in the region, ATMs have cash, and pensions are delivered on time.

“Just yesterday, after the first enemy attack, I immediately called Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko and informed her of the situation. Clear priority measures that we can take together were determined. The situation was discussed with international partners, transit corridors were prepared, and negotiations were held with Ukrainian and international carriers,” informed the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration.

He noted that about 200 passengers on the Izmail route were redirected via alternative routes to avoid a transport collapse at the border.

Tragic consequences

Kiper also emphasized the tragedy of December 18: “Unfortunately, during an air raid, a resident of our region died while in a car with children. This once again reminds us of how ruthless war is and that the civilian population suffers the most.”

In conclusion, he assured that the bridge would be restored, and additional alternative crossings and ferries would be organized.

It was previously reported that due to the attack by the Russian Federation and damage to the bridge in Mayaki, residents are unable to leave Odesa for Moldova and the southern part of the region.

It was also noted that after the strike on an important bridge in Odesa, the government made a statement regarding fuel prices, the Odesa–Izmail connection, and the elimination of the consequences of the bombardment.

The situation in the region remains tense, but the authorities are actively working to ensure the safety of the population and restore transport routes. It is important that the provision of necessary resources continues and that the only connection with other regions is restored as soon as possible.
