Odesa to Suspend All Public Transit on January 18 Due to Power Issues.
Public Transit in Odesa to Halt Entirely on January 18
According to Novyny.live: Public transportation in Odesa will face significant disruptions on January 17-18, 2024. On Sunday, January 18, all social transport services will be canceled due to ongoing power supply problems. A limited number of routes will operate on January 17.
Full public transit service is scheduled to resume on January 19, 2024. The city's electric tram and trolleybus network has been offline since December 13, 2023, because of electricity shortages, which necessitated the introduction of free social buses. These free buses serve several key corridors previously covered by electric transport.
- When launched, the social bus system deployed over 20 buses across six routes.
- This service has become a critical alternative for city residents during the prolonged energy crisis.
For now, with electrical issues persisting, these social buses remain the only available public transit option for Odesa's residents.
Impact of the Transport Shutdown on Residents
The complete suspension of service on January 18 is expected to severely hinder mobility for Odesa's inhabitants, particularly for those who rely on public transit to commute to work or reach medical facilities. The planned restoration of normal operations on January 19 will be a crucial step in improving the city's transport situation. This disruption is part of a wider pattern of infrastructure challenges in Ukraine stemming from the ongoing war. Residents are hopeful for a stabilization of the power grid, which would allow a return to more normal daily life.
