Elderly Woman Hid Draft Evader Under Toys in Car: Details and Price of Smuggling Operation in Odesa.
57-Year-Old Arrested for Running Illegal Border Crossing Scheme
According to Novyny.live: Authorities in Ukraine’s Odesa region have detained a 57-year-old woman on suspicion of organizing the illegal transport of military-age men across the state border. The fee for this illicit crossing was set at $4,500, according to officials.
At the moment of her arrest, the woman attempted to conceal one of the men under a blanket, pillows, and children’s toys inside a vehicle. She had already received $700 as a partial payment before being taken into custody. Investigators have formally charged her under the article addressing 'illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine.'
Pretrial Detention and Broader Context
The court has ordered her pretrial detention with the option of posting bail set at 266,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. This case follows a previously uncovered operation in the same region that illegally moved 147 men abroad disguised as sailors. The cost for that smuggling service was $7,300 per person.
This arrest highlights the ongoing issue of illegal border crossings in Ukraine, a problem that has intensified amid the current military conflict and social pressures. Law enforcement agencies are actively cracking down on schemes that exploit wartime conditions for profit.
The situation underscores the seriousness of illegal border trafficking, which remains a pressing concern given Ukraine’s contemporary socio-economic climate. It is crucial for the public to recognize the risks tied to such actions and to back state efforts in combating these crimes.
