Odesa Region Overhauls School Cafeterias with Free Meals and New Kitchens.
Major School Cafeteria Renovation Underway in Odesa Region
According to Novyny.live: A comprehensive initiative to upgrade school cafeterias is progressing in Ukraine's Odesa region. This program aims to expand free meal access for all students, modernize food preparation facilities, and provide chef training. Over the past two years, more than 150 school kitchens have been renovated as part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of student nutrition. These improvements are particularly significant as Ukraine works to maintain educational standards during wartime.
The project includes creating 'hub kitchens' that will prepare meals for multiple neighboring communities. A key infrastructure development is the planned construction of a central food production facility in Izmail, supported by American donors. This facility is expected to improve meal quality while reducing overall operational costs. As Anton Shalyhailo noted:
This project will allow us to significantly improve the quality of meals and lower the costs of providing them.
Furthermore, over a thousand cooks have undergone retraining at culinary hubs in Odesa, Savran, and Izmail. This training is a crucial component for maintaining high food standards in schools.
Today, we provide free meals to our schoolchildren from the first through the eleventh grades, plus a preferential contingent, emphasized Shalyhailo.
Adapting to New Challenges
Educational institutions have also adapted to challenges like power outages through the installation of generators. Specifically, schools in Kyiv's Solomianskyi and Dnipro districts received 20 generators from the Olena Zelenska Foundation. 'In principle, our educational institutions have already adapted to organizing the educational process during power outages,' stated Shalyhailo.
Therefore, the renovation of school cafeterias in the Odesa region represents a vital step in improving student nutrition and ensuring their needs are met under current difficult conditions.
This large-scale overhaul not only enhances dining conditions for students but also addresses pressing contemporary issues, such as ensuring an uninterrupted educational process during an energy crisis. The creation of hub kitchens and the retraining of cooks demonstrate a systematic approach to improving food service infrastructure in schools. These measures could serve as a model for other Ukrainian regions seeking to modernize school meals and adapt to new realities.
