Odesa Zoo Should Become the Best in Ukraine: What Will Change for the Animals.
The Odesa Zoo is one of the oldest in Ukraine. This year, it was visited by auditors from the State Ecological Inspection and a special working group of city council deputies. They assessed the conditions for keeping animals and the state of the territory. Journalists learned about the results of these visits.
The State Ecological Inspection conducted an inspection of the Odesa Zoo to determine how well the animals are cared for. Inspectors paid attention to the living conditions of wild animals and checked whether the enclosures are large enough for the residents.
'During the inspection, it became clear that some animals live in enclosures that are too small for them. Therefore, inspectors developed a plan of corrective actions that must be implemented after approval from the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Ecology, and the Ministry of Agriculture,' said Dmitry Rovnyn, head of the department of the natural reserve fund and plant life of the Odesa region.
The problem with the zoo lies in the poor condition of the administrative buildings. This hampers the development of the institution and the expansion of enclosures. The director emphasized the need for funding for the restoration and modernization of the zoo.
After two inspections, the focus at the Odesa Zoo was on the conditions for keeping animals and plans for improving the infrastructure of the facility.
