Extreme downpours in Odessa due to climate change

According to inkorr.com: Climate change is already noticeably affecting the weather in Ukraine, especially in Odessa. Extreme downpours have become more frequent, leading to floods, road inundation, and transportation issues. This is reported by the publication 'Glavkom', citing forecasters from Telegraf.

Since 2015, Odessa has recorded 14 heavy rains during which 50 to 100 mm of precipitation fell in a short period of time. Previously, such phenomena were rare, occurring only 2-3 times a year. According to forecasters, these extreme rains are becoming more common, especially over the sea. The last rain in the city occurred due to a cyclone that got stuck over Odessa due to a blockage from the north. Such atmospheric phenomena, which were previously only seen in the tropics, are now observed in other latitudes.

According to candidate of geographical sciences Vera Balabukh: 'The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold. This is physics: warmer air - more moisture - stronger rains.'

Similar weather anomalies are noticeable in other cities in Ukraine. For example, in Lviv and Brody, precipitation exceeded 100 mm in a short time, posing serious threats to urban infrastructure. Heavy rains in large cities can lead to flooding, transportation difficulties, and other challenges for residents.

Experts urge taking measures to prevent consequences and implementing 'green' infrastructure to reduce risks from more frequent natural precipitation caused by climate change.

Deteriorating climate conditions are causing an increase in extreme downpours in various regions of Ukraine, which requires urgent action to address the consequences and mitigate risks. These changes demand active measures from local authorities and society to preserve infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents.
