Sturgeons Return to Zaporizhzhia After 70 Years: Consequences of the Dams Destruction.
According to inkorr.com: Sturgeons that have not appeared in Zaporizhzhia for 70 years are beginning to return, with their weight exceeding 10 kg. This has happened as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station, which facilitated the migration of fish from the Black Sea to Zaporizhzhia.
“The absence of the dam has made it possible for fish to migrate upstream. Fish from the Black Sea can now freely approach Zaporizhzhia – which is about 200 kilometers from the restored river channel,” emphasized Doctor of Biological Sciences Viktor Demchenko.
Restoration of Historical Spawning Grounds
Dr. Demchenko also noted that before the construction of dams in Zaporizhzhia, there were traditional spawning grounds for sturgeon, but they were destroyed. Now, sturgeon are restoring their natural habitats due to improved ecological conditions following the destruction of the Hydroelectric Power Station that occurred more than two years ago.
A New Life for Sturgeons
Now, thanks to the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station, sturgeons from the Black Sea are appearing again in the rivers near Zaporizhzhia, returning to their historical places. This indicates a successful reconstruction of the natural environment and a restoration of wildlife in natural areas after human interventions.
The return of sturgeons is an important step towards restoring the ecosystem of the region. These fish not only play a significant role in biodiversity, but they can also become a symbol of the ecological recovery work that is ongoing in Ukraine. The conservation of such species requires a careful attitude towards the environment, and such changes inspire reforms in environmental policy.
