Theatrical in Kyiv: the secrets of the metro station that not everyone knows.
In the capital, between the stations 'Khreshchatyk' and 'Universitet', there is a famous metro station 'Teatralna'. Its history impresses with curiosity, as it is an important transfer hub.
History of the 'Teatralna' metro station
The 'Teatralna' station rose as a transfer hub for the new metro line - Syretsko-Pecherska. It is also interesting that construction began near the already existing tunnels, rather than inside them.
In 1987, train traffic between 'Universitet' and 'Khreshchatyk' was suspended for almost six months due to construction. After the work was completed, a new segment was added to the main line, while the old tunnels were left under conservation.
This station was solemnly opened on November 6, 1987. The architects were Mykola Alyoshkin, Anatoliy Krushynskyi, and Tamara Tselikovska, while the sculptor was Anatoliy Kush. Initially, there was a bas-relief of Lenin on the central wall, but it was replaced by an image of a theater hall during decommunization in 2014.
Originally, the station was called 'Leninska', but in 1993 it was renamed 'Teatralna' due to its proximity to the National Opera of Ukraine and the Lesya Ukrainka Theater.
Moreover, changes in traffic on the bridge over Desenka are planned in Kyiv due to repair work, and the 'Salyut' hotel has been declared bankrupt.
The interesting history of the 'Teatralna' metro station shows that this location has not only an important place in the public transport system but also a rich history and architectural features. The renaming and changes at the station reflect the development of society and its attitude towards the past. Changes in traffic on the bridge and the bankruptcy of the hotel are just additional aspects of capital life that should be considered.
