Pope Francis appointed a fierce Trump critic as Archbishop of Washington.
Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Robert McElroy as Archbishop of Washington following the U.S. presidential election.
Cardinal McElroy, expressing his prayers for the success of the new administration, criticized Trump's threats of mass deportation of immigrants, calling them incompatible with Catholic doctrine.
McElroy has criticized Trump on immigration issues, particularly regarding mass deportations, and has called for the acceptance of refugees in the church.
The Cardinal has also called for the acceptance of divorced and LGBTQ Catholics in the church and a shift in the church's focus on sexual activity as a sin. He has also voiced his criticism of abortion.
McElroy will replace Cardinal Wilton Gregory, who is retiring after sexual abuse scandals in the clergy. McElroy's new appointment was officially announced in the Vatican on the Feast of the Epiphany.
Confirmed victory for Trump
The U.S. Congress has officially certified the victory of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance in the presidential election.
Vice President J.D. Vance and Donald Trump received 312 electoral votes during the certification of the election results held in November. Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party candidate, received 226 votes.
The inauguration of the new president and vice president will take place on January 20, 2025, when Donald Trump will take the oath of office and deliver the inaugural address.
