Armenia to Hold Referendum on EU vs. EAEU Membership, Says Pashinyan.
Armenia’s Ongoing Cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union
According to Espreso.tv: Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that the country will continue its partnership within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) until its citizens can vote in a referendum to decide between the European Union and the EAEU. He emphasized that Armenia has no plans to apply for EU membership at this stage. This statement comes amid growing debates over the nation’s geopolitical alignment.
Pashinyan also noted that Moscow has deemed Armenia’s stance on the EU and EAEU unacceptable. In this context, he remarked that
“as long as Armenia has not formally applied for EU membership or moved closer to candidate status, holding any referendum would be illogical.”
Risks for Armenia Under Discussion
Leaders Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin have discussed potential risks for Armenia, drawing comparisons to the 'Ukrainian scenario.' These comments highlight the region’s complex political landscape and the foreign policy challenges Armenia faces.
The situation surrounding Armenia’s foreign policy choice is crucial for understanding the dynamics between post-Soviet states, particularly the influence of Russia and the West on regional politics. Armenia’s position reflects a desire to balance integration into European structures with maintaining traditional ties to Russia, which could have far-reaching implications for regional stability. A referendum, as a potential democratic tool, may become a pivotal moment in determining the country’s future, but its execution depends on various factors, including the international political climate.
