Five devices you can leave plugged in: what experts say.
According to ТСН: Among Ukrainians, there is a common belief that electrical devices should be unplugged to avoid danger and reduce electricity expenses. In the past, such caution was justified for older devices, but modern gadgets are designed with safety in mind. Most of them can operate in standby mode, consuming minimal energy.
Some types of electrical devices can be left plugged in without worry for safety and finances, as long as they are functional and certified.
Five types of electrical devices you can leave plugged in
1. Modems and Wi-Fi routers
These devices are designed for continuous operation. A constantly operating router:
provides 24/7 internet access;
maintains the operation of home network services;
does not require frequent unplugging to save electricity.
Modern models have energy-saving modes and overheating protection systems, so turning off the router at night or during brief absences is not necessary.
2. Security and alarm systems
There is no need to turn off these devices unnecessarily. Continuous power is essential for the operation of:
motion sensors;
video surveillance;
alarm buttons;
central alarms.
Even a temporary shutdown can create a 'dead zone' where the system does not perform its functions. Most security systems are equipped with backup batteries, but primary power should remain connected.
3. Smart home devices
Automation systems are becoming increasingly popular and also require constant power. They include:
'smart' bulbs;
climate controllers;
Wi-Fi sockets;
temperature and humidity sensors;
voice assistants.
These gadgets operate in standby mode and respond to commands since they are permanently connected to the network. Energy consumption in this mode is minimal, and control systems ensure their protection.
4. Power banks and charging stations
External batteries and home charging stations are often left plugged in for user convenience. Most modern models:
are protected from overcharging after reaching 100%;
switch to a safe standby mode;
have built-in overheating protection.
It is important to use only certified devices and periodically check their condition to minimize risk.
5. Some light fixtures (night lights and timer lamps)
This category includes:
LED night lights;
lights with motion sensors;
lights with a timer or automatic switch.
These devices consume minimal amounts of energy and mainly operate only when needed.
Importantly, remember
Although a device may be on the safe list, it is important to follow some rules:
use certified equipment;
do not leave damaged devices plugged in;
regularly check the condition of extensions;
do not overload one socket with multiple high-power devices.
Modern electronics are often designed for constant connection to the grid. Routers, security systems, smart devices, power banks, and energy-efficient lamps can be left plugged in, provided they are functional and used correctly.
Earlier, it was reported that according to the assessment of the energy programs director of the Razumkov Center, Volodymyr Omelchenko, although local, long-term power outages are possible, a complete power cut in Ukraine this year is not feasible.
According to these recommendations, Ukrainians can safely use modern electrical devices without frequently unplugging them. This reduces not only electricity costs but also ensures convenience in daily life. It is only important to take care of the condition of the equipment and not forget the basics of safety.
