Pentagon Introduces Censorship: Leading US Media Outlets Announce Boycott.
According to inkorr.com: American television channels Fox News, ABC, CBS, and NBC refused to enter into a new agreement with the US Department of Defense that regulates journalists' access to the Pentagon. CNN also made the same decision. According to The Washington Post, the media believe that the new rules significantly restrict their ability to cover national security issues.
Concern of the Channels
In a joint statement, the channels expressed concern that the new rules harm press freedom. They emphasized their readiness to continue reporting on the activities of the US Armed Forces according to independent journalistic standards.
Under the new requirements, journalists are prohibited from receiving or requesting information that the Pentagon does not officially provide. Furthermore, the department can revoke accreditation from those who do not sign the agreement. The Atlantic journalist Nancy Youssef emphasized that such a move could lead to major media outlets lacking journalists at the Pentagon.
Boycott of the Agreement
The majority of leading national and international publications supported the boycott of the new agreement. The only channel that agreed to sign it was One America News. The Pentagon Press Association called for a review of the department's policy and noted the lack of legal grounds for imposing such restrictions on journalists.
The agreement, which restricts journalists' access to military facilities, is seen as a serious violation of freedom of speech, which has triggered a negative reaction from the media. The fight for transparency in the US Armed Forces continues, as journalists consider it important to cover military activities according to professional standards.
