Peace Talks Hit a Wall as Russia Demands Control of Donetsk Region.
Ukraine War Ceasefire Negotiations Stall
According to TSN.ua: Talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine concluded this Wednesday in Abu Dhabi without meaningful progress. The primary obstacle remains control over a specific part of the Donetsk region, which Russia demands Ukraine cede as a precondition for peace. This demand underscores the deep-seated territorial disputes at the heart of the conflict.
The Ukrainian-controlled portion of Donetsk in question is approximately 80 km long and 64 km wide. In a related context, Russian President Vladimir Putin last autumn avoided answering questions about establishing a demilitarized zone. Furthermore, a 28-point peace plan proposed in November by the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump failed to gain traction.
Ukraine's Stance and International Efforts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in December that Ukraine would not withdraw its troops from the front line unless Russia did the same. Zelenskyy also emphasized Ukraine's insistence on deploying international peacekeeping forces to the region. He expressed a desire to sign a security guarantees agreement before holding elections, stating:
“I would very much like us to first sign security guarantees, and then other documents.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Discussions on issues like a free trade zone, troop withdrawals, and the sequence of steps toward peace remain on the table. However, the results of the latest talks offer little hope for a swift resolution to the conflict. The lack of progress highlights the complexity of the situation and the need for continued efforts from both sides to achieve peace in the region.
The failure of the recent negotiations underscores the protracted nature of the war and the deep divisions between the parties. Control over the Donetsk territory remains the central stumbling block, complicating any attempts at compromise. While the involvement of international peacekeepers and the provision of security guarantees could be pivotal for the peace process, their implementation requires active commitment from all involved.
