Peace Talks in Abu Dhabi: US, Ukraine, and Russia Discuss Ending the War.
Negotiations to End the War in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: High-level consultations involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia took place in Abu Dhabi to discuss ending the war. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the talks as complex but confirmed they are ongoing in the United Arab Emirates. Peskov stated the work will continue and noted that both countries recognize the necessity of beginning negotiations on a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). These talks represent a rare diplomatic channel between the parties since the full-scale invasion began.
Diverging Positions of the Sides
During the discussions, the Ukrainian side insisted on implementing its 'Peace Formula' to end the conflict. Russia, represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, laid out its position, stating that:
“The Kremlin is willing for Ukraine to continue as a state, but Kyiv must adopt a neutral status.” - Sergey Lavrov
These Kremlin demands for ending the war underscore the profound difficulty of the current situation and the critical need for continued diplomatic efforts. The conflict has created the most severe rupture in East-West relations since the Cold War.
The Abu Dhabi negotiations mark a significant step in attempts to reach a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. They are occurring against a backdrop of intense international focus on the region and the potential global security implications. The outcome of these consultations could influence not only the future of Ukraine but also international stability, as the issue of strategic arms control concerns the broader international community.
