Ukrainian Banks May Not Accept Dollar Bills Issued Before 1996: What to Do.
According to inkorr.com: In Ukraine, financial institutions may refuse to accept dollar bills issued before 1996 due to difficulties in verifying them. All bills issued after 1914 remain valid unless officially withdrawn from circulation. Such restrictions are related to the redesign of dollar bills that began in 1996 and includes new security features. This is reported by 24 Kanal.
Do Banks Accept Old Dollar Bills?
Financial institutions in Ukraine may not accept old dollar bills due to technical difficulties in verifying them. Bills issued before 1996 do not contain modern security features, making it harder to confirm their authenticity. In such cases, banks may:
refuse to accept bills due to inability to verify them;
require an additional fee for processing such banknotes.
Moreover, financial institutions will not accept:
Counterfeit bills submitted to the National Bank of Ukraine for additional verification, and in case of confirmation of forgery, to law enforcement agencies.
Heavily worn bills that are sent for collection to be replaced.
Since 2023, the National Bank of Ukraine has abolished the category of 'slightly worn' banknotes to eliminate subjectivity in their assessment. This decision aims to standardize the verification process and reduce the impact of human factors.
Regarding history, in the 20th century, the USA had high denomination bills – 500, 1000, 5000, and even 10,000 dollars, but they were gradually withdrawn from circulation. The highest denomination, 100,000 dollars, was used exclusively for internal transactions between banks of the Federal Reserve System and was never in cash circulation, notes the National Museum of American History.
