Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip
In his first Sunday noon blessing as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV addressed the faithful in Saint Peter's Square, calling for a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine and an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Pope Leo XIV mentioned Ukraine, describing the ongoing conflicts as 'a third world war by parts'. He also called for the release of prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children to their families.
In his first interview, Pope Leo XIV firmly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, characterizing it as 'imperialist in nature'. This position differs from the cautious rhetoric of the previous Pope Francis, who avoids direct formulations regarding the aggressor.
Pope Leo XIV also called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the provision of humanitarian aid to the civilian population. He particularly welcomed all mothers in the world and emphasized the importance of continuing the fight for peace and the dignified life of all people.
