According to UATV: On July 28, Ukraine observes a national day of remembrance for its defenders and defenders who perished while in Russian captivity. The date commemorates the deadly attack on the Volnovakha correctional facility, which occurred overnight on July 28–29, 2022. That strike killed at least 53 people and wounded more than 130. It stands as one of the most lethal known incidents involving prisoners of war in the modern era, drawing international outrage and demands for justice.

Official figures paint a grim picture: Russian forces executed 129 Ukrainian POWs early in the full-scale invasion, and the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office reports over 300 deaths in Russian places of detention. On December 23, 2022, combatant Oleksandr Dubovyk went missing near Bakhmut. His wife, Elena Dubovyk, recalled:

“He wrote to me, said: 'A couple of days and I'll get in touch.' And he never did.”

Tragedy at Olenivka and Its Lasting Impact

On July 29, 2022, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a strike on the Olenivka colony, where 193 prisoners—including defenders of Mariupol—were held. Among those killed was merchant marine motorman Oleksandr Ishchenko. A fellow prisoner with the call sign 'Moroz' stated:

“They took him prisoner. And even then, the enemy could do nothing more than execute our Alexander.”

This remembrance day honors all who gave their lives for Ukraine's freedom and independence. The tragedies leave a deep scar on the nation's memory, and it is vital to keep them alive. As Alena put it:

“When we learned the results of the forensic examination conducted in Ukraine—the ground fell from under our feet.”
