GPS Spoofing During Air Alerts: Why the Phone Shows the Wrong Location

According to ТСН: During air alerts, GPS and time on mobile phones or navigation devices may show incorrect coordinates. For example, a user may "move" from Kyiv on the map to Bryansk or even Spain.

Experts explain that this is not a hacking of devices, but a consequence of the operations of electronic warfare (EW) systems. The Armed Forces of Ukraine use GPS spoofing to confuse enemy drones and missiles. This leads to disruptions in civilian navigation systems.

How Users Should Act

Experts from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine advise during alerts:

  • to disable automatic time and time zone detection and set them manually;

  • to temporarily turn off GPS if geolocation is incorrect;

  • to use offline maps and set points manually;

  • for drivers to study routes in advance and orient themselves based on road signs;

  • to stop if necessary to clarify direction.

Recall that earlier in the Kyiv metro it was reported, what to take with you to the 'underground' and how to behave during shelling. Metro workers ensure the uninterrupted operation of infrastructure, helping people quickly orient themselves, comfortably settle on platforms, and providing support in difficult moments.

In conditions of instability, it is important to remember about safety and not to rely solely on modern technologies. Navigation systems can be unreliable, so it is always useful to have a plan of action in case of unforeseen circumstances. Remember that safety is always a priority.
