Rising Groundwater in Kyiv Poses Challenges for Metro System.
Issues Emerge in Kyiv's Metro
According to TSN.ua: Specialists are closely monitoring damp patches and minor leaks that have appeared within the Kyiv Metro system, a direct result of rising groundwater levels. Despite these issues, train operations continue safely without interruption. The Kyiv Metro is a vital artery for the city, carrying millions of passengers annually, and its resilience is crucial.
These wet spots and localized seepages are primarily observed during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt, which cause groundwater to rise. As a precautionary measure, technical openings in the suspended ceiling at the "Ipodrom" station may be temporarily uncovered to facilitate water drainage.
Recent Incidents and Their Impact
Further concerns were raised by a flooded pedestrian walkway near the "Kharkivska" station in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, where water levels reached up to 20 cm in some areas, hindering passenger movement. Additionally, on February 15, a section of the suspended ceiling collapsed at the "Teremky" station, while localized plaster detachment from a ceiling was recorded at the "Chernihivska" station. These incidents were triggered by significant temperature fluctuations and intense precipitation, which have exacerbated the strain on the aging infrastructure.
Metro engineers are actively working to address the consequences of these situations, and train traffic remains normal for now. Authorities are urging passengers to exercise caution and follow any guidance issued while using public transport during this period of adverse weather conditions.
This situation underscores the critical importance of maintaining urban transport infrastructure in the face of climate change and severe weather impacts.
Prolonged rains and temperature swings can lead to serious problems requiring swift responses from relevant services. Consequently, metro specialists continue their vigilant monitoring of the system's condition to ensure passenger safety and operational stability.
