Pensioners lose benefits on train tickets: who else will have discounts in 2025.
Ukrainian pensioners have certain benefits for rail travel, but this does not apply to all types of tickets. The order 'On Approval of Amendments to the Rules for the Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, Cargo Baggage and Mail by Railway Transport of Ukraine' defines the rules for pensioners who can use free or discounted travel.
Pensioners can travel for free on suburban trains if they have a pension certificate. However, when it comes to high-speed trains and long-distance trains, pensioners must pay the full ticket price, as there are no discounts for long routes.
Pensioners also have the right to free travel on public transport in cities: buses, trolleybuses, and trams. However, the metro and taxis are not included in this category.
Who else can benefit from discounts and free travel in 2025
Besides pensioners aged 60 and above, other categories of citizens can also take advantage of railway transport benefits:
- large families - children have the right to free travel on suburban trains;
- students - receive a 50% discount on tickets in reserved-seat cars of long-distance trains, regional trains, and suburban trains;
- people with disabilities - are entitled to free travel on suburban trains and a 50% discount on long-distance trains;
- veterans and combatants - free travel on suburban trains and discounts on long-distance trains;
Those affected by the Chernobyl disaster, war participants, veterans, and others may also exercise the right to free travel on suburban trains.
Considering the demand recorded this year, some trains and routes may be overcrowded, complicating ticket acquisition for passengers. The state also provides assistance to pensioners through benefits and social services, but violations of established norms may lead to penalties.
Ukrainian pensioners have certain benefits for rail travel; however, this does not cover all types of transportation. Pensioners can only use free or discounted transport on suburban trains and public transport in cities. They will still have to pay the full price for long-distance trains. Additionally, other categories of citizens can also enjoy various benefits for railway transport, including large families, students, people with disabilities, veterans, and combatants.
