Writer Vynnychuk remains a member of PEN Ukraine: details.
Writer Yuriy Vynnychuk remains a member of the Ukrainian PEN, although he was previously expelled from the organization. PEN Ukraine reports this.
The Executive Board of the Ukrainian PEN had previously decided to expel Yuriy Vynnychuk, but this decision sparked serious discussions. Therefore, a general meeting was convened to discuss the situation.
At the general meeting, a discussion was held, in which members of the Ukrainian PEN participated, including Yuriy Vynnychuk. As a result of the vote, the majority of registered participants voted against his expulsion.
Thus, the decision of the general meeting prevails over the decision of the executive board. The executive board called on the members of the organization to exercise restraint and responsibility in their statements to avoid causing pain and re-traumatizing others.
Previously, Yuriy Vynnychuk was expelled from the Ukrainian PEN due to his statements that contradict the values of the organization and harm its reputation.
As the writer claims, he stood up for Professor Yosyp Los, who is accused of harassment, and noted that many young women poets have had the opportunity to develop thanks to contacts with influential members of the Writers' Union.
It is believed that Yosyp Los was dismissed from his position as a professor of foreign press due to accusations from his former students of harassment.
