According to ТСН: Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung tissue that leads to the accumulation of fluid or pus in the alveoli, making gas exchange difficult. The most vulnerable to this disease are children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic or non-communicable diseases.

Pneumonia can be caused by various pathogens: bacteria (such as staphylococci, pneumococci, streptococci), viruses (respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, COVID-19), and fungal infections.

Symptoms of pneumonia

  • cough

  • sputum production

  • sharp increase in temperature

  • chest pain

  • difficulty breathing

  • shortness of breath

  • general weakness

  • decreased blood pressure

  • excessive sweating

In the case of severe disease progression, the following may also be observed:

  • unpleasant putrid smell of sputum

  • shallow and rapid breathing — over 30 breaths per minute

  • nausea and vomiting

How pneumonia is transmitted

Infection can occur when inhaling viruses or bacteria present in a person's nose or throat. Pneumonia pathogens are transmitted through the air droplets — during coughing or sneezing.

The main danger of pneumonia lies in its potential serious complications, such as respiratory failure, so it is important to seek medical attention as soon as symptoms appear.

According to WHO, pneumonia and diarrhea account for 23% of mortality among children under five years old, and worldwide they have caused approximately 1.17 million deaths among children in this age group.

How to protect against pneumonia

To prevent the disease, vaccination is recommended, particularly vaccination against pneumococcus, which is the most common cause of pneumonia. Vaccinen against Haemophilus infection and influenza will also be beneficial, as influenza can cause serious complications including pneumonia.

In addition to vaccination, the risk of the disease can be reduced by following simple preventive measures:

  • wash your hands with soap

  • quit smoking — it hinders the lungs from effectively cleansing and protecting the body from microbes

  • lead an active lifestyle and maintain a balanced diet

In this regard, an outbreak of a respiratory virus has been reported in China, primarily affecting children and causing severe respiratory symptoms, pneumonia, and bronchiolitis. This dangerous virus has already spread to Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and India.

The situation with pneumonia remains complex, especially in the face of new outbreaks of viral infections. It is important to follow medical recommendations and conduct preventive measures to reduce the risk of disease. In the context of globalization and changes in climatic conditions, attentiveness to one’s own health and the health of those around becomes particularly relevant.
