History of the holiday

According to legend, in 910, when Constantinople was surrounded by enemies, the city's residents gathered in a temple, prayed to the Most Holy Theotokos, and asked for salvation. After this, the Virgin Mary appeared over the temple, covered the people with her veil, and saved the city from the attackers. In Ukraine, the Protection is one of the most important holidays for the Cossacks, when they chose a new ataman.
