Politico: Brussels is preparing a proposal for Trump on funding Ukraine.
The European Union is developing a financial support plan for Ukraine after 2025
The European Union is actively working on a financial support plan for Ukraine after 2025 to prevent a possible 'mini-Munich' if Donald Trump returns to the presidency of the United States. This was reported by Politico referencing European officials.
According to the publication, several options for financing Ukraine are being considered in Brussels after the current G7 aid package of 50 billion euros expires in 2025. Among the discussed mechanisms are the provision of concessional loans with long repayment periods, expanding the EU's borrowing capacity similar to the SURE program for 100 billion euros, utilizing the European Stability Mechanism with a lending potential of 422 billion euros, and reallocating unused funds from the NextGenerationEU program.
The EU is preparing proposals for the Trump administration
Additionally, it is reported that the European Union is developing a comprehensive package of proposals for Donald Trump's administration, which may include increased purchases of American liquefied gas and agricultural products, as well as a tougher stance on China.
According to one European official, 'we have to choose between Trump's plan and Putin's plan, so if we do not offer an alternative for which we are willing to pay.'
It is also being explored to use a 'lend-lease' scheme similar to the proposal by former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. This scheme would allow Ukraine to receive billions of euros to borrow American military equipment without restrictions.
