The Orange Revolution - 20. Associates revealed why Yushchenko's headquarters feared the dark forces and rockets.
Officially, Viktor Yushchenko announced the start of the election campaign on July 4, 2004, at the Singing Field in Kyiv, in the presence of thousands of his supporters.
The memoir of Volodymyr Filenko, 'The Score of the Revolution', tells how Volodymyr Yushchenko had to overcome the team's resistance regarding the choice of location for the start of the election campaign announcement. He suggested the Singing Field, while other team members expressed concerns about the weather and possible provocations.
Nevertheless, Viktor Yushchenko chose the Singing Field for his speech, despite his staff's doubts. He was pleasantly surprised by the large number of supporters who gathered in the field. According to Volodymyr Filenko’s memories, Vira Ivanivna Ulyanchenko, head of the presidential secretariat under Yushchenko, changed her mind about the choice of location and called it 'brilliant'.
The Orange Revolution began on November 21, 2004, and lasted for 17 days. It concluded on December 8 when the Verkhovna Rada changed the composition of the Central Election Commission and made amendments to the presidential election law. These changes were the result of a compromise between the authorities and the opposition and led to a constitutional reform that limited the president's power.
Volodymyr Filenko comments that this compromise was necessary for the country and returned Ukraine to a parliamentary-presidential republic. Meanwhile, Taras Stetskyi recounts that Pliushch, one of the opponents of the compromise, desired the broadest powers for himself.
The Orange Revolution was the largest protest in Ukraine that changed the course of history. On the anniversary of these events, Ukrainians celebrated by sharing memories and photos from the Maidan. A series of materials prepared by the publication 'Glavkom' included interviews with Roman Bezsmertnyi and recalled the symbolism and artifacts of the orange movement.
