According to Espreso.tv: A large-scale fire broke out at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra following a Russian attack in the early hours of June 15, causing extensive damage. The Dormition Cathedral suffered the most, with its roof catching fire over an area of roughly 800 square meters. The assault also damaged 19 UNESCO-listed sites, underscoring the severity of the incident. This historic monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been a cornerstone of Ukrainian spiritual and cultural identity for centuries.

The fire has resulted in losses exceeding 500 million hryvnias. Restoration efforts at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra are expected to take approximately two years. Restoration expert Maksym Ostapenko commented:

“The Dormition Cathedral has sustained severe damage, but it can be restored.” – Maksym Ostapenko

He also highlighted that “this is the largest iconostasis in Ukraine.”

In addition to the Dormition Cathedral, other structures were affected, including the Kushnyk Tower. Overall, 17 additional objects were damaged in the attack. Church representative Epifaniy described the assault as:

Cultural heritage expert Tetiana Berezhna added that “the attack on the Lavra is one of the gravest crimes against world cultural heritage.”
