College Staff May Qualify for Draft Deferment: Here Are the Requirements.
Education Workers and Mobilization Deferments
According to Novyny.live: Certain conditions must be met for education sector employees—including college laboratory managers—to be eligible for a deferment from military mobilization. This exemption applies to staff of Ukrainian educational institutions, provided their position is officially registered and they hold at least a 0.75 full-time equivalent (FTE) workload.
Rights of Teaching Personnel
Lawyer Yuriy Ayvazyan has stated that teaching staff at specialized pre-higher education institutions are entitled to a mobilization deferment. He explained:
So, if the staffing table lists the position as laboratory head, and that laboratory is a unit within the college's core area of activity, then it qualifies as a teaching position. Therefore, if it is your primary place of employment and you work at least 0.75 FTE, you will have grounds for a deferment. — Yuriy Ayvazyan
For college employees, meeting these conditions is essential to securing a draft deferment. This can be a critical factor for those working in education, as the deferment may significantly impact both their professional and personal lives.
During wartime and ongoing mobilization in Ukraine, the issue of military service deferments for education workers has become especially important. It is vital that educators understand their rights and options, as this knowledge can help them maintain professional stability and ensure the continuity of the country's educational system. Furthermore, it highlights the essential role teachers and staff play in society, particularly during times of crisis.
