Transportation Rules - Where Pensioners Do Not Have Privileges.
Ukraine provides pensioners with a number of social benefits that ease their daily lives and help them save money. In particular, the benefits apply to the use of public transport, but not to all types.
The editorial team of Novyny.LIVE explains which transport pensioners will have to pay for in July 2025.
Where Pensioners Can Travel for Free
According to the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution dated May 17, 1993, elderly people have the right to use public transport for free. This applies to:
- trams;
- trolleybuses;
- city buses;
- suburban electric trains (starting from 2025 — across the country, regardless of registration).
To take advantage of the benefit, one must present a pension certificate. In transport with an electronic control system, one must have a preferential electronic ticket — it is issued free of charge.
Where Payment for Transportation is Required
The benefit does not apply to the following types of transport:
- taxis;
- long-distance trains;
- electric trains that run over long distances.
As for route taxis within populated areas, local councils set the travel conditions for pensioners. Information about benefits can be obtained directly in the minibus or on the websites of city and village councils.
Previously, we reported that elderly people often become targets for fraudsters. Scammers take advantage of their trust, physical vulnerability, and need for care. To avoid falling into a trap, it is important to know the most common methods of deception and avoid them.
We also mentioned that the loss of a loved one is not only a profound emotional pain but also significant expenses. In 2025, the state provided for financial assistance for burial for certain categories of citizens.
Ukrainian pensioners have a number of privileges that allow them to use certain types of public transport for free. However, there are types of transport for which they still have to pay. It is important to know the rules and conditions in order to properly take advantage of social benefits.
