The Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, announced the dissolution of the Bundestag. He appointed a new election date for February 23. Steinmeier stated that in difficult times, a stable government and a reliable majority in parliament are needed.
On December 20, Steinmeier had already announced his intention to dissolve the Bundestag, as there were no prospects for creating a stable parliamentary majority for the government.
After the ruling coalition collapsed on December 16, the Bundestag did not express confidence in Chancellor Scholz, who had submitted the government's confidence vote request to parliament on December 11.
