Border Guard Sentenced to Six Years for Revealing Military Unit Location
According to Novyny.live: A border guard in Ukraine's Sumy region has been sentenced to six years in prison for disclosing the location of a military unit to an acquaintance. The Hlukhiv City District Court delivered the verdict on January 13th. This case highlights the severe legal consequences for compromising military security during wartime.
The incident occurred on May 15th of last year when the border service inspector met with his acquaintance and revealed the sensitive information. During a subsequent search of the accused's property, authorities discovered an illegal arsenal, including:
- a pistol,
- three magazines,
- approximately 600 rounds of ammunition,
- two grenade casings,
- and two fuses.
The defendant pleaded guilty and expressed remorse for his actions. The court sentenced him to six years of imprisonment, with the term scheduled to commence on May 21, 2025. The verdict is not yet final and can be appealed.
The accused stated: 'I understood that I was storing the weapons illegally, but I intended to voluntarily surrender them after the war ended.'
This prosecution underscores the strict criminal liability for disclosing military information, a particularly grave offense during an active conflict. The court's decision serves as a stark warning to other service members about the repercussions of such breaches and demonstrates ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat military-related crimes and illegal arms trafficking. The sentence remains subject to appeal.
