EU prepares 19th sanctions package against the Russian Federation: what will fall under the new restrictions.
According to FREEДOM:
UK's reaction to Russian aggression
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for obstructing peace initiatives. He noted that recent Russian attacks damaged the British Council building in Kyiv, highlighting the true face of the Kremlin regime and its attempts to intimidate countries that support Ukraine. 'Every day, not only Ukraine is at risk, but all of Europe,' Starmer pointed out.
Attacks on civilians
Starmer accused Putin of the tragedies occurring in Ukraine, as Moscow continues to strike not only military facilities but also civilians. On the night of August 28, buildings of EU representations and the British Council were damaged during an attack on Kyiv, and Starmer considers this blackmail in the context of negotiations.
'My thoughts are with all those affected by the senseless Russian strikes on Kyiv, which damaged the British Council building. Putin is killing children and peaceful residents, undermining hopes for peace. This bloodshed must end,' he stated.
European sanctions
As noted by The Telegraph, targeted strikes on cultural institutions of the negotiation participants openly demonstrate Russia's disdain for peaceful dialogue. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen emphasized:
'That is why we are exerting maximum pressure on Russia. This means strengthening our sanctions regime. Soon we will present our 19th package of tough sanctions...'
EU countries are already actively working on new restrictions in energy and financial services.
Military support for Ukraine
'Ukraine needs support now, and needs military support right now...' - emphasized Kaja Kallas.
She also reported that the supply of ammunition and other military equipment to Ukraine is being discussed for the near future.
Summary
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that we cannot be naive about Russia. He pointed out that despite the efforts of world leaders, the Russian army continues to terrorize peaceful citizens of Ukraine. 'This is a clear signal that Putin is ready to continue and attack the civilians of Ukraine,' he commented.
In response to Russian attacks, Europe is strengthening its defensive capabilities. For example, Finland has completed the construction of part of the fencing on its border with Russia, and Poland plans to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP in its budget project for 2026.
'We cannot change our geographical position. We are neighbors of Russia. This means we must prepare our Armed Forces and society for possible conflict,' said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
This situation in Ukraine has drawn the attention of world leaders, and the efforts of the international community are focused on supporting Ukraine and its people. It is important to observe what reactions and actions are being taken to enhance security in the region and counteract aggression from Russia.
