Russian fighter jets violated Estonia's airspace: how NATO responded to the provocation.
According to The Sun: Vladimir Putin's military aviation ignored NATO's stealth aircraft when they invaded Estonia's airspace for 12 minutes, causing tension in Europe.
Russian MiG-31 fighter jets breached airspace near the island of Vainodloo between 9:58 and 10:10 AM on Friday, ignoring warnings from Italian F-35s that had taken off from the airbase in Estonia.

Estonian officials' reaction
Colonel Ants Kiviselg, commander of Estonia's military intelligence center, noted:
“Russia confirmed communication with the Italian pilots flying the F-35s, but clearly, they ignored it and did not respond to signals.”
He also added that these aircraft “should have known they were in [Estonian] airspace.”
Tallinn characterized this incursion as “unprecedentedly brazen” — it is already the fourth violation this year — and called for urgent NATO talks in accordance with Article 4.
Prime Minister Kristen Mihal expressed outrage:
“Such a violation is absolutely unacceptable.”
She added:
“NATO must provide a united and strong response to any provocation.”
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna considers this a “very serious violation of NATO's airspace,” noting that the last time Estonia experienced such a prolonged incursion was in 2003 — just before joining NATO.
NATO's delayed response
Aircraft launched from Petrozavodsk towards Kaliningrad were initially spotted by Finnish planes, after which Italian pilots tracked them to international waters.
Russia denies the violation, claiming that its aircraft remained in neutral waters of the Baltic Sea.
However, the Estonian Ministry of Defense states that radar and visual evidence confirms otherwise.
Donald Trump warned of a “big problem” after the incident. In response to a question about the threat to NATO, the U.S. president said:
“I don't like it. I don't like it when this happens. It could be a big problem.”
This incident occurred against the backdrop of new Russian attacks on Ukraine, resulting in at least three deaths and dozens of injuries.
Ukraine reported that Russia launched 580 drones and 40 missiles, of which 552 drones and 31 missiles were shot down.
“Every such strike is not a military necessity but a deliberate strategy by Russia to terrorize the civilian population and destroy our infrastructure,”– said President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Air raid sirens sounded for 11 hours across Ukraine as missiles fell on Dnipro, Chernihiv, Khmelnytskyi, and the outskirts of Kyiv.
The situation in Ukraine
In Ukraine, there was a reaction: the country announced joint drone attacks on two Russian oil refineries in Novokubyshevsk and Samara.
Zelensky called the incursion into Estonian airspace “outrageous” and claimed it was “not an accident.”
He warned:
“This requires a systemic response. Decisive actions need to be taken – both collectively and individually by each nation.”
Poland, concerned about the attacks, scrambled its aircraft, while NATO radar surveillance systems were put on heightened alert.
British politician Yvette Cooper characterized it as “reckless intrusion” and stated it was time to increase economic pressure on Putin.

Estonian officials emphasized that there is no need to activate collective defense under Article 5, but noted that brazen flights – along with cyberattacks – are Moscow's attempts to distract the West from Ukraine.
European leaders condemned Putin's blatant actions. EU foreign policy chief Kaia Kallas characterized it as “an extremely dangerous provocation” and warned:
“We must not show weakness.”
Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė noted that “NATO's border is being tested with a certain purpose. We must take this seriously.”
The situation remains tense, and further actions by NATO allies will be monitored by the international community.
