The Ukrainian Parliament has adopted laws on the establishment of a jury court in the country. This was reported by MPs Oleksiy Honcharenko and Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

The deputies supported the consolidation of the consideration of two draft laws and their adoption through a simplified procedure. Draft law No. 3843 on the establishment of a jury court passed its first reading with amendments with the participation of 232 votes. Draft law No. 3844 on amendments to the law 'On the Judiciary' in connection with the jury court was also supported by 237 deputies.

The draft law stipulates that a jury court is a form of people's justice established by the Constitution of Ukraine. It will consider criminal cases in a court of first instance.

Ukraine already has a jury court, but it is not a classical model in which decisions are made by citizens. Instead, there is a system of lay judges in place. Citizen jurors are not fully independent in making decisions, which does not comply with the principles of a true jury court.

The jury court will consist of a professional judge and a jury panel. The presiding judge of the jury court will lead the court session but will not make decisions regarding the charges.

The jury panel will consist of eight jurors. Their composition will be formed through random automated selection of candidates from the list of Ukrainian citizens who permanently reside in the relevant court district.

The jury panel will render a verdict after the trial of the charges. Being a juror is not only a right but also a duty of a citizen of Ukraine. The juror will participate in administering justice in the context of a single court case.

The popularity of remote hearings in court cases is increasing in Ukraine.

Most corrupt officials receive penalties in the form of fines rather than imprisonment.
