Hungary threatens to reconsider support for Ukraine if Trump is elected

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Sunday that Europe will have to reconsider its support for Ukraine if Donald Trump is elected as U.S. president, as the continent "will not be able to bear the burden of war alone".

Orban, who opposes military aid to Ukraine, is confident that Trump shares his views and will seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

The Hungarian prime minister supports the former president, the Republican candidate, in the confrontation with the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming elections on Tuesday.

"We (in Europe) must realize that if there is an interim president in America, which I not only believe in, but also see in numbers... if what we expect happens, and America becomes interim, then Europe cannot remain pro-war," Orban said.

According to him, the Ukrainian issue will be one of the main topics at the meeting of European leaders in Budapest next week, where the European Political Community sessions and an informal meeting of EU leaders will take place.

"Europe cannot bear the burden [of war] alone, and if Americans move towards peace, then we also need to adapt, and this is what we will discuss in Budapest," Orban emphasized.

Europe is concerned about how the outcome of the U.S. elections will affect the war in Ukraine and the security of the continent. Orban has already caused discontent in Brussels with his close ties to Russia and opposition to aid for Ukraine.

In July, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated that the Hungarian government views Trump as a "chance for peace" in Ukraine.
