Expert on Power Outages: This is the Only Way to Preserve Nuclear Plants.
According to ТСН: Russia is trying to exhaust the resources of Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs), which are critically important for the energy stability of the country. To avoid serious accidents at the nuclear units, power outages have to be implemented.
Impact Risks and Limitations
Expert of the Institute of Energy Studies Yuriy Korolchuk stated this on the air of 'Public Radio'. According to him, the shelling by Russian troops complicates the recovery of the energy system, and the increased load on the nuclear plants raises the risk of systemic failures, which could lead to prolonged repairs of the units.
'This is risky because when the plants operate at full capacity, and there may be no longer 9 units but 7 or 6, this will mean significant electricity limitations,' Korolchuk says.
The expert noted that the only way to preserve the integrity of the energy system is to limit electricity supply.
'This will allow us to emerge in the spring with a whole NPP system, but this does not mean that there will be no outages in spring. The NPP units will start going for repairs, and solar generation will not increase immediately—it will begin somewhere in May-June. And in March-April, there will be outages. The energy system is exhausted,' emphasized Korolchuk.
It is also worth noting that earlier the CEO of Yasno, Serhiy Kovalenko, stated that problems in the Ukrainian energy system will continue as long as the systematic Russian shelling does not stop.
Overall, the situation in the Ukrainian energy system remains tense due to military actions that undermine the stability of key infrastructure facilities. Limiting electricity supply is a forced measure to maintain the safety and integrity of the energy system, which, in turn, will affect the lives of many Ukrainians in the coming months.
