Disruptions to Ukraine's Railway Network

According to TSN.ua: Following nighttime attacks on February 8th and 12th, Ukraine has experienced temporary suspensions of rail service, particularly in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. Russia is conducting a concerted campaign against railway infrastructure, inflicting significant damage and endangering civilian safety. These attacks are part of a broader strategy to cripple Ukraine's critical supply and transport networks.

On February 10th, 2025, the state railway company 'Ukrzaliznytsia' announced temporary route adjustments for some trains in the Sumy region due to shelling. In the night of February 7-8, Russian forces struck railways in the Chernihiv region, disrupting train schedules. The threat to rail transport intensified after Russia launched 244 aerial targets against Ukraine on the night of February 11-12, including 219 attack drones and 24 ballistic missiles of the 'Iskander-M' and S-300 types.

Impact on Infrastructure and Safety

In a related assault on energy infrastructure, this marks the eleventh mass attack on DTEK's thermal power plant since October 2025. As a result of these strikes in Dnipro, private homes were damaged and four people were injured. Furthermore, in Odesa, Russian forces damaged a business center, a market, and a critical infrastructure facility.

The situation in Ukraine remains tense, with rail transport continuing to suffer from the aggression. Authorities and 'Ukrzaliznytsia' are taking necessary measures to ensure passenger safety and restore normal railway operations. The ongoing attacks on Ukraine's railways highlight a growing threat to the civilian population and the country's economy, which relies heavily on rail for logistics and evacuation.

The current temporary halts in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions are likely to cause further complications for freight and passenger transport, negatively impacting the supply of goods and population mobility. Effective action by 'Ukrzaliznytsia' and the state is critically important for ensuring safety and restoring the transport system's functionality amid the ongoing conflict.
