Zelenskyy Details Russian Strikes on Gas and Rail Infrastructure, Announces New Air Defense Plans.
Strikes and Their Consequences
According to UATV: On January 30, 2023, the 1437th day of Russia's full-scale invasion, multiple attacks damaged gas infrastructure in the Donetsk region and railway facilities. A Ukrainian Railways wagon was hit in the Dnipropetrovsk region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported these strikes, stating they are part of a broader campaign to destroy Ukraine's critical infrastructure. These systematic attacks aim to cripple the nation's energy and logistics networks, especially as winter continues.
Other Russian military targets included strikes with ballistic missiles on warehouses belonging to the American company Philip Morris in the Kharkiv region. The cities of Nikopol and Kherson were also shelled, along with border areas of the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions. These assaults demonstrate the ongoing aggression from Russia and the persistent threat to civilian populations.
New Measures and International Cooperation
President Zelenskyy also informed about discussions regarding a new air defense system specifically designed to counter drones. During a meeting, a report was heard from military intelligence chief Oleh Ivashchenko, highlighting the importance of adapting defense strategies to meet emerging threats. The development of such systems is critical as drone warfare becomes a central feature of the conflict.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian President held a phone call with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, during which issues of cooperation and support were discussed. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Romania's readiness to collaborate, noting:
"I thank him once again for the support and readiness to cooperate" - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He also emphasized that the economic costs of the war are significant for Russia, as
"the economy and the corresponding losses from the war are something that will be taken into account in Russia" - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In the current situation, Zelenskyy stressed that "people should not be billed for services they did not receive," underscoring the necessity of protecting Ukrainian citizens' rights during wartime. These events reflect the severity of the situation in Ukraine and the constant challenges the country faces under military aggression.
The attacks on January 30 underscore not only the continuation of hostilities but also the deliberate targeting of critical infrastructure, which could have severe consequences for Ukraine's civilian population and economy. The discussion of new air defense systems points to the Ukrainian military's adaptation to modern threats, particularly from unmanned aerial vehicles. Cooperation with international partners like Romania remains key to supporting Ukraine during this difficult time.
