Ukrainian Air Defenses Intercept 136 of 155 Russian Attack Drones.
Russia Launches Large-Scale Drone Assault on Ukraine
According to UATV: On March 5, 2023, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with a wave of 155 strike drones. Ukrainian air defense units engaged the incoming threat, which was launched from multiple directions. These included the Russian regions of Bryansk, Kursk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as from the temporarily occupied Crimean territories of Hvardiiske and Chauda.
Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted or suppressed 136 of the hostile drones. Approximately 100 of these were identified as Iranian-made 'Shahed' type drones. Additionally, 18 strike drones were recorded over eight different locations, with drone debris found at three sites. This massive drone attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas.
Missile Strike Causes Civilian Casualties
In a separate incident on March 4, 2023, a Russian missile strike on railway infrastructure in the Odesa region resulted in four civilian casualties, including two children. These events underscore the ongoing intensity of the war and Russia's increasing reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles for strikes deep inside Ukraine.
The attacks highlight the severe and persistent tensions in the conflict, demonstrating how modern drone technology is shaping contemporary warfare. The widespread use of UAVs is altering the tactical approaches of both sides, necessitating continuous advancements in air defense systems, which remain critical for Ukraine's security.
