Ukraine Fortifies Defenses as Russia Prepares a Fresh Assault on Donetsk.
The Situation in Donetsk and Luhansk
According to UATV: Ukrainian military forces are holding defensive lines in the Donetsk region in anticipation of a new Russian offensive. Parts of Donetsk remain under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which established fortified positions even before Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. These defensive lines are a critical component in protecting Ukrainian territory from further aggression.
Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources
Meanwhile, in the occupied territories of Luhansk, there are reports of illegal resource extraction. In the Antratsyt district, four licenses have been issued for gold exploration and mining, as well as for the search for copper and zinc. These actions underscore the economic motives behind the invasion and pose a long-term threat to the region's stability and environmental security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that 'Ukraine does not recognize the Russian presence, either de facto or de jure.'
The situation in Donetsk and Luhansk remains tense, with Russia preparing for renewed military action. The defensive positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are crucial for containing the aggression and ensuring regional security. Concurrently, the illegal exploitation of natural resources in occupied territories highlights the aggressor's economic ambitions, which could have lasting consequences for Ukraine's ecology and economy. These developments underscore the vital importance of sustained international support and attention to Ukraine, as regional stability depends on decisive action from the global community. The conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014, continues to be a focal point of the wider war.
