Russia withdraws from the Convention against Torture: what does this mean for the world

According to inkorr.com: The Russian government has decided to withdraw from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture, which was adopted in 1987. This means that the country will no longer be subject to the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, which was granted the opportunity to visit places of detention and receive information about the conditions of their confinement.

What does this mean for Russia?

Withdrawal from the convention will free Russia from mandatory obligations to the Committee. Now the international body will not have the opportunity to visit institutions on the territory of the country, obtain detailed information about the conditions of detention, and move within them.

In March 2022, Russia was expelled from the Council of Europe due to aggression against Ukraine, which further strained relations with European partners.

Concurrently, Russia is negotiating with the US regarding the reduction of nuclear arsenals. President Trump expressed plans for the US together with the RF and China regarding the minimization of nuclear threats.

However, in the context of escalating international relations and geopolitical conflicts, the issue of nuclear safety and arms race remains relevant and requires attention from all participants in global politics.

The decision of the Russian government to withdraw from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture may deepen international disagreements and cause certain consequences for the country in the context of cooperation with international partners on various levels.
