Ukraine's Air Defense Under Strain from Russia's Growing Drone Arsenal

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's ability to repel Russian strikes is being tested by a significant increase in the number of attack drones deployed by the Russian Federation. Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force Command, detailed shifts in Russian attack tactics, highlighting a major rise in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Russia is now conducting more frequent missile strikes, utilizing a range of weaponry including:

  • Kalibr
  • Kh-101
  • Kh-555
  • Kh-55SM
  • Iskander-K

From 2025, the country plans to launch more ballistic missiles, which could severely complicate Ukraine's air defense situation. Furthermore, Russia launches over a hundred drones nightly, including models like the 'Shahed,' 'Italmas,' and 'Geran.' During mass attacks, the number of launched drones can reach 500 or more. This relentless pressure exposes critical gaps in Ukraine's defensive shield.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that as of the morning of January 16, the state had run out of missiles for several of its air defense systems. He also noted that PAC-3 missile systems were arriving only a day after attacks that threatened blackouts. Yurii Ihnat emphasized that such circumstances severely impact the capacity to counter Russian assaults:

“This seriously affects our ability to repel such attacks.” — Yurii Ihnat

He stated that to counter these attacks, Ukrainian forces are forced to use everything at their disposal: “We have to use everything we have to repel such attacks.”

Ihnat also recalled that before one such attack, Ukraine received supplies only a day prior: “And indeed, before one of these attacks, we were provided with the means just the day before.” President Zelenskyy pointed to problems with available systems: “NASAMS stood empty, a Patriot stood empty.”

Thus, the expansion of Russia's drone fleet and the evolution of its attack tactics directly undermine Ukraine's capacity to defend its airspace, presenting new and severe challenges for its air defense network.

The buildup of Russia's drone arsenal and its shifting attack patterns signal an escalation of military action in the region and heighten risks to Ukrainian air defenses. This situation demands an urgent response and adaptation of Ukraine's defense strategies, given limited resources and delays in receiving new systems. In light of these mounting threats, continued and timely international support is crucial to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
