Russian Artillery Strikes Zaporizhzhia, Wounding Six and Destroying Dozens of Cars.
Zaporizhzhia Shelling on January 28, 2023
According to UATV: On January 28, 2023, Russian forces launched a rocket artillery attack on residential districts of Zaporizhzhia, injuring six civilians and causing extensive damage to vehicles. The assault resulted in significant destruction across the city.
The attack damaged 14 apartment buildings and shattered 200 windows. Furthermore, more than 25 cars were either damaged or completely destroyed. Emergency services and volunteers worked at the scene to assist the wounded. One of the rockets that struck the area became embedded in the ground and was later defused by explosives experts.
Aftermath of the Attack
Local residents described the terrifying aftermath of the shelling. One resident, Volodymyr, recounted:
"The explosion was so powerful it shook the house, I almost fell out of bed. It's just shocking—such a crater! It's about ten meters in diameter and four meters deep."
Another resident, Serhii, stated:
"More than 25 cars were damaged or destroyed. All the cars parked in the courtyard row had their windows blown out and various other damages. One car is simply gone. It was thrown somewhere, and its engine is lying on the entrance canopy."
This incident occurred against a backdrop of continued Russian aggression. Earlier that night, on January 28, Russia also launched an attack on Ukraine using 146 drones and a ballistic missile. The situation in Zaporizhzhia underscores the ongoing conflict's severe impact on civilian populations. The city remains a frequent target due to its strategic location near the front lines.
This shelling serves as further evidence of the conflict's escalation in Ukraine, where military actions directly endanger civilian lives. The destruction of infrastructure and harm to non-combatants creates serious humanitarian consequences, including the need for medical aid and the repair of damaged homes. The events in Zaporizhzhia reflect the broader regional tension and highlight the urgent need for international attention to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
